La investigaci\u00f3n determin\u00f3 que la inflamaci\u00f3n es causada por la reactivaci\u00f3n del virus de Epstein-Barr, en el contexto de haber estado en contacto adem\u00e1s con el virus SARS Co-V2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Las doctoras Poli y Vial participaron en esta colaboraci\u00f3n internacional que incluy\u00f3 al INSERM en Francia, el NIH en Estados Unidos y otros centros de investigaci\u00f3n. Durante la pandemia, sus equipos trabajaron en el reclutamiento y seguimiento de pacientes con MIS-C en conjunto con colegas del Hospital Roberto del R\u00edo, esfuerzo clave para el \u00e9xito del estudio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cEstamos muy orgullosas de haber sido parte de esta investigaci\u00f3n que permite avanzar en la comprensi\u00f3n del MIS-C y abre nuevas posibilidades de tratamiento para ni\u00f1os afectados por esta condici\u00f3n\u201d<\/em>, afirmaron las doctoras Poli y Vial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Antecedentes del MIS-C<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El MIS-C es un s\u00edndrome inflamatorio grave que afecta a menores semanas despu\u00e9s de una infecci\u00f3n por COVID-19. Investigadores de Charit\u00e9 \u2013 Universit\u00e4tsmedizin Berlin y el Centro Alem\u00e1n de Investigaci\u00f3n sobre el Reumatismo en Berl\u00edn (DRFZ) determinaron que la reactivaci\u00f3n del virus de Epstein-Barr (EBV) desencadena una respuesta inflamatoria excesiva en estos pacientes. Los resultados, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-08697-6\">publicados en la revista Nature<\/a>, podr\u00edan guiar nuevos tratamientos para el MIS-C y otras afecciones relacionadas con la COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El estudio incluy\u00f3 a 145 ni\u00f1os con MIS-C de diversos pa\u00edses, entre ellos Chile, gracias a la participaci\u00f3n del ICIM UDD. Como grupo de comparaci\u00f3n, se analizaron 105 ni\u00f1os que contrajeron COVID-19 sin desarrollar MIS-C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Descubrimientos clave y futuras terapias<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El EBV es un virus latente en la mayor\u00eda de la poblaci\u00f3n, pero su reactivaci\u00f3n puede generar una respuesta inmunol\u00f3gica incontrolada en ni\u00f1os con MIS-C. Los investigadores identificaron que niveles elevados de una mol\u00e9cula llamada TGF\u03b2 impiden que el sistema inmunol\u00f3gico controle el virus, generando una inflamaci\u00f3n severa que puede ser fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aunque los tratamientos actuales con corticoides e inmunoglobulinas han sido efectivos, los hallazgos sugieren que el bloqueo espec\u00edfico del TGF\u03b2 podr\u00eda ofrecer nuevas opciones terap\u00e9uticas para el MIS-C y el COVID prolongado.
