Research Interest: 

 

  • My research interest is in host response to viral infection, and how host and pathogens interact.  We have use hantavirus infection as a model for studying inter-individual differences that terminate in a different clinical course when infected. Andes orthohantavirus (ANDV) causes hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) which is a disease with no cure or vaccine and with a case fatality rate of 30%. Although the Chilean strain of ANDV is the same throughout the country, the clinical spectrum differs depending on individual response, requiring individual treatment. These clinical courses varies from an asymptomatic illness to death for cardiopulmonary shock The unique landscape of having an admixed population in Chile enables us to use genetic and genomic tools that are helping us understand this neglected disease pathophysiology. We are also using immunological approaches to understand host response to ANDV along with studying the virus. Our ultimate goal is to propose novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers of disease severity for HCPS.

 

  • Mi interés en la investigación es la respuesta del hospedero a las infecciones virales, y cómo interactúan el huésped y estos patógenos. Hemos utilizado la infección por hantavirus como un modelo para estudiar las diferencias entre individuos que terminan en un curso clínico diferente cuando se infectan. El ortohantavirus Andes (ANDV) causa el síndrome cardiopulmonar del hantavirus (HCPS), que es una enfermedadsin cura ni vacuna y que tiene una letalidad de 30%. Aunque la cepa chilena de ANDV es la misma en todo el país, el espectro clínico difiere según la respuesta individual, lo que requiere un tratamiento individual. Estos cursos clínicos varían desde una enfermedad asintomática hasta la muerte por shock cardiopulmonar. El paisaje único de tener una población mestiza en Chile nos permite utilizar herramientas genéticas y genómicas que nos ayudan a comprender la patofisiología de esta enfermedad. También estamos utilizando enfoques inmunológicos para comprender la respuesta de los pacientes al ANDV junto con el estudiar al virus y su roedor portador. Nuestro objetivo final es proponer nuevos blancos terapéuticos y biomarcadores de gravedad de la enfermedad para HCPS.
