En una jornada marcada por la colaboración científica y la innovación terapéutica, el Instituto de Ciencias e Innovación en Medicina (ICIM) de la Facultad de Medicina Clínica Alemana Universidad del Desarrollo inauguró oficialmente su nueva Plataforma de screening integrado para el descubrimiento e innovación terapéutica, en el marco del 1er Simposio Latinoamericano en descubrimiento y desarrollo de fármacos.
La iniciativa, financiada por el proyecto Fondequip Mayor EQY230019 de ANID y cofinanciada por la UDD, Universidad de Talca, Universidad de Valparaíso y Fundación Ciencia y Vida, busca posicionar a Chile como un referente regional en investigación biomédica aplicada, acelerando el desarrollo de nuevas terapias farmacológicas.
La actividad se realizó en el Laboratorio de Innovación y Formación Farmacéutica, espacio que alberga el nuevo facility y que fue diseñado para integrar la formación de estudiantes con la investigación de frontera. En la ceremonia, el Dr. José Manuel Munita, vicerrector de investigación UDD y director del ICIM, destacó que “este proyecto no solo potencia la investigación interdisciplinaria dentro de nuestra universidad, sino que también abre un espacio de colaboración con otras instituciones del país, brindando servicios al sector público y privado y consolidando nuestro compromiso con la innovación, la ciencia y la formación de investigadores de excelencia”.
La Dra. Marcela Castillo, impulsora de la carrera de Química y Farmacia en la UDD, recordó el origen del proyecto: “Cuando soñamos Química y Farmacia, soñamos en grande. Queríamos hacer una carrera diferente a la oferta nacional, y este laboratorio representa ese sueño: que desde el primer año los estudiantes estén inmersos en proyectos de alto nivel”.
Por su parte, el director de la carrera, QF Heriberto García, enfatizó el valor formativo del espacio: “Este laboratorio busca que los estudiantes comprendan que tienen un camino por delante en la innovación. Muchas veces, innovar es simplemente mejorar lo que siempre se ha hecho”.
Como introducción al simposio, el Dr. Iván Alfaro ofreció la charla «Nuevas capacidades y oportunidades para el desarrollo de fármacos desde Latinoamérica», donde recorrió la historia de los fármacos desde el uso ancestral de plantas medicinales hasta los desafíos actuales, donde solo el 10% de las drogas en etapa preclínica llegan a los pacientes.
Tecnología de vanguardia al servicio de la ciencia
La nueva plataforma cuenta con equipamiento único en Sudamérica, como el robot de pipeteo automatizado Tecan Fluent 780, capaz de manejar hasta 10.000 muestras diarias en ambientes asépticos, y el lector de microplacas multimodal Tecan Spark, que permite realizar ensayos en células y macromoléculas purificadas con múltiples modalidades de lectura.
Además, el microscopio de alto contenido Zeiss Cell Discoverer 7 permite realizar screening fenotípico automatizado en células vivas, tejidos y organoides en 2D y 3D, bajo condiciones fisiológicas controladas. A esto se suman equipos de análisis biofísico como el microcalorímetro de titulación isotérmica y el espectrofluorímetro con polarización de fluorescencia, que permiten estudiar con alta sensibilidad las interacciones entre fármacos y sus blancos terapéuticos.
Una invitación a la comunidad científica
La plataforma está disponible para investigadores académicos, emprendimientos biotecnológicos y la industria nacional e internacional. “Nuestro objetivo es ser la puerta de entrada para que la investigación chilena llegue a las etapas de validación inicial para el descubrimiento de fármacos. Con esta plataforma única en Chile y Sudamérica, estamos un paso más cerca de lograrlo”, concluyó Alfaro.

In a Day Marked by Scientific Collaboration and Therapeutic Innovation, ICIM Inaugurates a Pioneering Platform for Drug Discovery in Latin America
The Institute of Science and Innovation in Medicine (ICIM) of the Faculty of Medicine, Clínica Alemana Universidad del Desarrollo, officially inaugurated its new Integrated Screening Platform for Drug Discovery and Therapeutic Innovation during the 1st Latin American Symposium on Drug Discovery and Development.
The initiative, funded by the Fondequip Mayor EQY230019 project from ANID and co-financed by UDD, Universidad de Talca, Universidad de Valparaíso, and Fundación Ciencia y Vida, aims to position Chile as a regional leader in applied biomedical research, accelerating the development of new pharmacological therapies.
The event took place at the Laboratory for Pharmaceutical Innovation and Training, which houses the new facility and was designed to integrate student training with cutting-edge research. During the ceremony, Dr. José Manuel Munita, UDD Vice President for Research and Director of ICIM, highlighted: «This project not only strengthens interdisciplinary research within our university but also opens a space for collaboration with other institutions in the country, providing services to the public and private sectors and consolidating our commitment to innovation, science, and the training of top-level researchers.»
Dr. Marcela Castillo, driving force behind the Pharmacy program at UDD, recalled the origin of the project:
«When we envisioned Pharmacy, we dreamed big. We wanted a program different from what was offered nationally, and this laboratory represents that dream: that from the very first year, students are immersed in high-level projects.»
Meanwhile, Heriberto García, Director of the program, emphasized the educational value of the space: «This laboratory seeks to help students understand that they have a path ahead in innovation. Many times, innovating simply means improving what has always been done.»
As an introduction to the symposium, Dr. Iván Alfaro delivered the lecture “New Capabilities and Opportunities for Drug Development from Latin America”, tracing the history of drugs from the ancestral use of medicinal plants to current challenges, where only 10% of drugs in preclinical stages reach patients.
Cutting-Edge Technology Serving Science
The new platform features unique equipment in South America, such as the Tecan Fluent 780 automated pipetting robot, capable of handling up to 10,000 samples daily in aseptic environments, and the Tecan Spark multimode microplate reader, which enables assays on cells and purified macromolecules with multiple reading modalities.
Additionally, the Zeiss Cell Discoverer 7 high-content microscope allows automated phenotypic screening in live cells, tissues, and organoids in 2D and 3D under controlled physiological conditions. Complementing this are biophysical analysis instruments such as the isothermal titration microcalorimeter and the fluorescence polarization spectrofluorometer, which enable highly sensitive studies of interactions between drugs and their therapeutic targets.
